What is WhatsApp API?

The WhatsApp API (officially the WhatsApp Business Platform, delivered as WhatsApp Cloud API) is Meta’s programmatic interface for businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale through software — not a single phone running the free Business app. You send order updates, OTPs, support replies, and marketing templates, and you receive customer messages via webhooks, all through Meta-hosted Graph API endpoints.

Cloud API has no built-in team inbox. Developers integrate Graph API directly, or a WhatsApp API provider (BSP) such as Ominiflow supplies inbox, bots, CRM, and campaigns. Meta bills per delivered template by country and category (India marketing ₹0.86, utility/auth ₹0.115; US marketing $0.0250). Ominiflow passes those fees at cost. With complete Business Manager documents, most teams go live in 5–7 business days. On-premise API was retired October 2025.

WhatsApp API meaning

In practice, WhatsApp API meaning is this: your company owns an official business number on Meta’s Cloud API, and software — not a personal phone — sends and receives the chats. People also say WhatsApp Business API, WhatsApp Cloud API, or WhatsApp Business Platform. They are the same stack in 2026. The free “WhatsApp Business” listing in an app store is a different product.

WhatsApp API for business is what you need when more than one person must reply, when Shopify or Zoho should fire a message, or when you need approved templates outside the 24-hour customer-care window. WhatsApp Cloud API

WhatsApp Cloud API is the current hosting model: Meta runs the messaging stack in its cloud. Your app (or BSP) authenticates with a token and calls Graph API to send messages, upload media, and manage templates. Status and inbound chats arrive as webhooks. You do not install a local WhatsApp server.

Meta retired on-premise WhatsApp Business API in October 2025. If a vendor still sells “on-prem WhatsApp,” treat that as legacy. New WhatsApp API integration work is Cloud API only. Ominiflow sits on Cloud API and adds the product layer teams actually use.

How WhatsApp API works

How WhatsApp API works is a loop between Meta, your BSP (or backend), and the customer’s WhatsApp client:

  1. You verify a business in Meta Business Manager and create a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA).
  2. You register a phone number on Cloud API (or via Embedded Signup through a BSP).
  3. You submit message templates. Meta reviews category (marketing, utility, authentication).
  4. Customers message the number, or they tap a Click-to-WhatsApp ad / website button.
  5. Inbound events hit webhooks. Agents reply in a shared inbox, or a bot answers first.
  6. Outside the 24-hour window, outbound messages must use an approved template. Inside the window, free-form replies are allowed (service billing changes 1 October 2026).

WhatsApp API features

WhatsApp API features split into what Meta exposes and what a provider builds on top:

  • Send and receive — text, images, PDFs, video, location, interactive buttons
  • Templates — business-initiated messages with Meta category and quality rating
  • Webhooks — delivery, read, inbound, and errors to your systems
  • Shared inbox — multi-agent replies on one official number (BSP layer)
  • Chatbot and AI agent — FAQs, qualification, human handoff
  • Broadcasts — segmented, opted-in campaigns
  • CRM and automation — lead stages, assignment, Shopify/Zoho events
  • Analytics — delivery, reply rate, agent SLA, quality rating

WhatsApp API pricing

WhatsApp API pricing is two line items. Meta charges per delivered template by the recipient’s country and category (conversation-based billing ended 1 July 2025). Your BSP charges a platform subscription for inbox, bots, and support. Ominiflow starts at ₹15,000/year in India and $99/month USD Scale, with Meta at published rates — no per-message markup.

India indicative Cloud API rates: marketing ₹0.86, utility and authentication ₹0.115. US marketing $0.0250. Full cards: WhatsApp API pricing by country · Ominiflow plans · buy WhatsApp API.

WhatsApp API setup

WhatsApp API setup is a Meta verification project, not an app install:

  1. Choose a WhatsApp API provider (or direct Cloud API if you will build inbox and templates yourself).
  2. Verify Meta Business Manager — legal name, address, website, and documents that match.
  3. Register a dedicated number that can receive OTP. It should not stay on personal WhatsApp unless you use coexistence.
  4. Submit utility, authentication, and marketing templates as separate categories.
  5. Connect inbox, chatbot, and CRM so the first customer message is not lost.

Most Ominiflow teams go live in 5–7 business days with complete documents; incomplete verification can take 2–4 weeks. Step-by-step: how to get WhatsApp Business API.

WhatsApp API automation

WhatsApp API automation is event- and rule-driven messaging: order shipped → utility template; keyword “price” → brochure flow; no reply in 4 hours → assignment reminder. It is not blasting an unpurchased list. Quality rating drops if you automate spam.

Ominiflow runs no-code workflows, keyword bots, and CRM-triggered sends on Cloud API. Platform overview: WhatsApp automation · automation platform guide · WhatsApp AI agent.

WhatsApp CRM

WhatsApp CRM is the shared inbox plus pipeline: every chat is a lead or ticket with owner, stage, and history. Without it, Cloud API still sends messages — they just live on whoever opened the laptop. Sales teams use assignment, notes, and Zoho/HubSpot sync so WhatsApp is the conversation layer, not a side channel.

WhatsApp chatbot

A WhatsApp chatbot greets, answers FAQs, collects fields (budget, order ID, city), and hands off to a human when intent is hot or the customer asks for an agent. It runs on Cloud API interactive messages, not the Business app’s canned replies. AI agents add retrieval from your help centre; they still need a handoff path.

WhatsApp broadcasts

WhatsApp broadcasts on the API are opted-in template campaigns — launches, restocks, reminders — with delivery reports and list segments. They are not the Business app’s 256-contact broadcast. Marketing templates always bill; utility must match a real event. Over-broadcasting is the fastest way to a Yellow or Red quality rating.

API integrations

WhatsApp API integration means your commerce and CRM stack can send and log WhatsApp without copy-paste. Typical patterns: Shopify order webhooks → utility templates; Zoho/HubSpot deal stage → follow-up; custom REST for your ERP. Prefer native connectors over a chain of Zapier zaps once volume rises.

FAQ

What is WhatsApp API in simple words?

WhatsApp API (WhatsApp Cloud API on the WhatsApp Business Platform) is Meta’s official way for businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages through software — shared inbox, chatbot, CRM, and approved templates — instead of one phone running the free Business app.

What is WhatsApp Cloud API?

WhatsApp Cloud API is Meta-hosted Graph API for WhatsApp Business. Your backend or BSP calls HTTPS endpoints to send templates, receive webhooks, and manage the number. On-premise WhatsApp API was retired in October 2025; new projects use Cloud API only.

What is the difference between WhatsApp Business API and the WhatsApp Business app?

The Business app is a free phone app for one person and small lists. WhatsApp Business API is Cloud API for teams: unlimited agents via a BSP inbox, automation, CRM sync, and compliant template broadcasts. You cannot download the API like an app.

How does WhatsApp API work?

You verify a business in Meta Business Manager, create a WABA, register a number on Cloud API, submit templates, and connect webhooks. Customers message the number; your BSP inbox or app replies. Business-initiated chats outside the 24-hour window must use approved templates.

What are WhatsApp API features?

Core Cloud API capabilities are send/receive, templates, media, webhooks, and quality rating. A WhatsApp API provider such as Ominiflow adds shared inbox, chatbot, broadcasts, CRM, analytics, and no-code automation on top of those endpoints.

How much does WhatsApp API cost?

Two bills: Meta per delivered template (by country and category) plus a BSP platform fee. Ominiflow starts at ₹15,000/year in India and $99/month USD Scale, with Meta fees at cost. India indicative rates are marketing ₹0.86, utility/auth ₹0.115.

How do I set up WhatsApp API?

Pick a BSP or direct Cloud API, verify Business Manager, register a number not tied to personal WhatsApp, submit templates, and connect your inbox/CRM. With complete documents, most Ominiflow teams go live in 5–7 business days.

Do I need a BSP to use WhatsApp API?

Developers can call Cloud API directly via Meta’s Graph API. Most businesses use a WhatsApp API provider for Embedded Signup, inbox, templates UI, chatbot, and support so they do not build that stack themselves.

Is on-premise WhatsApp API still available?

No. Meta deprecated on-premise WhatsApp Business API in October 2025. New projects must use Cloud API only.

Ready to use WhatsApp API for your business?

Ominiflow gives you Cloud API access plus the inbox, chatbot, CRM, and broadcasts your team needs.
