RCS vs WhatsApp vs SMS comparison for Indian businesses

What is the difference between RCS, WhatsApp, and SMS in India?

RCS vs WhatsApp vs SMS in India is three different pipes. SMS is the TRAI-DLT text channel: no app, low richness, per-SMS DLT rates typically around ₹0.12–₹0.25. RCS Business Messaging is Google’s rich successor to SMS in the native Android (and, where supported, iOS) messaging app — branded sender, cards, chips — billed by mobile operators / aggregators. Google documents how RCS is billed and does not publish a public India rate card. WhatsApp Cloud API is Meta’s template + session channel inside WhatsApp, with a published country × category card (India marketing about ₹0.86, utility/auth about ₹0.115 per billed template — verify live). Ominiflow is a WhatsApp Cloud API platform (Meta fees at cost, plans from ₹15,000/year). It does not sell RCS. Use SMS/RCS for reach into users who are not on WhatsApp or have not opted in there; use WhatsApp when the thread must hold support, OTP, cart, and agents on one number.

Vendor homepages in India have started selling RCS vs WhatsApp vs SMS as if one table ended the argument. The table is easy. The invoices are not. Google documents RCS billing mechanics exhaustively and does not publish what a delivered RCS costs in India. Meta publishes a WhatsApp country card. SMS still runs through DLT. This page keeps those three facts in separate columns so you do not budget a WhatsApp utility rate against an RCS slide that never named an operator.

Ominiflow is WhatsApp-first Cloud API — inbox, bots, Meta at cost. We do not resell RCS. If you need RCS or SMS on the same contract as WhatsApp, that is a CPaaS conversation (Gupshup, Karix, and peers). Comparison: Ominiflow vs Gupshup.

  • SMS — fallback OTP, users with no WhatsApp, TRAI-registered headers. Lowest richness.
  • RCS — branded rich messages in the default SMS app when the device and operator support RCS. Cost is aggregator/operator, not a Google storefront number.
  • WhatsApp Cloud API — the thread where Indian D2C already talks: COD, shipped, agents, CTWA. Published Meta rates. App required (WhatsApp).
  • A homepage that quotes “₹0.10 RCS vs ₹0.50–1.00 WhatsApp” without naming the operator invoice and the Meta category is mixing units. WhatsApp marketing ₹0.86 is not comparable to an uncited RCS promotional rate.
  • Run WhatsApp as the system of record for conversations. Keep SMS as OTP fallback. Add RCS only if you have an aggregator contract and a segment that is not reachable on WhatsApp.

RCS fallback to SMS is the silent cost. If the device is not RCS-connected, you paid for a rich campaign and delivered a text. WhatsApp does not “fall back” to SMS; you either have a session/template path or you send SMS yourself as a second channel.

Why RCS pricing pages in India argue with each other

Google’s RCS for Business documentation explains how partners are billed (events, deliveries, agent models — the mechanics). It does not hang an INR menu next to “basic”, “single”, and “rich” the way Meta hangs a CSV on the WhatsApp pricing page.

What you will see in the market instead:

  • Aggregator quotes (often under NDA, often promotional).
  • Newspaper or industry-blog figures that name one operator for one month.
  • WhatsApp competitors quoting RCS as “a fraction of WhatsApp API” while comparing RCS promo units to WhatsApp marketing templates — never to WhatsApp utility ₹0.115.

Until your aggregator invoice names the event type and the fallback-to-SMS rate, you do not have an RCS cost model. You have a landing page. OTP on WhatsApp vs DLT SMS is a cleaner rupee comparison because both cards are public enough to argue: WhatsApp vs SMS for OTP.

When each channel wins for an Indian brand

  • SMS wins for authentication fallback, users who never installed WhatsApp, and statutory headers you already run on DLT.
  • RCS wins if you already buy CPaaS, need branded cards in the default messenger for Android-heavy segments, and will measure fallback. Do not buy RCS to “replace WhatsApp support.”
  • WhatsApp wins when the job is a conversation: CTWA click, COD confirm, order status, shared inbox, chatbot, loyalty in chat. That is the Ominiflow product. Playbooks: COD confirmation · loyalty program.

Omnichannel CPaaS (SMS + RCS + WhatsApp on one enterprise contract) is a real architecture for banks and large retailers. It is also how you inherit three quality systems and three opt-in models. Mid-market D2C usually loses money pretending it needs all three in month one.

Ominiflow’s honest line

We pass Meta WhatsApp fees at the published card and run the inbox/automation layer from ₹15,000/year. We will not quote an RCS rate we do not bill. If a competitor’s only differentiator is “RCS at India’s best rates,” ask for the operator rate card, the fallback clause, and whether support tickets still land on WhatsApp. Most of their WhatsApp screenshots will look like ours; the RCS line is the upsell.

FAQ

Is RCS cheaper than WhatsApp in India? expand_more

Not as a universal fact. WhatsApp publishes category rates. RCS prices are aggregator/operator quotes and often exclude SMS fallback. Compare the same job (OTP vs promo vs support), not a marketing unit vs a utility unit.

Does Ominiflow offer RCS messaging? expand_more

No. Ominiflow is WhatsApp Cloud API. For RCS, talk to a CPaaS aggregator. You can still run WhatsApp on Ominiflow beside that contract.

Can RCS replace WhatsApp Business API? expand_more

Not for shared inbox, Cloud API templates, Click-to-WhatsApp ads, or in-chat commerce the way Indian D2C already runs them. RCS is a native-messenger broadcast/conversational layer with different reach and fallback behaviour.

Why don’t I see a Google RCS rate card for India? expand_more

Google documents how RCS Business Messaging is billed through partners. It does not publish a consumer-style INR menu comparable to Meta’s WhatsApp CSV. Ask your partner for the live operator tariff and fallback rate.

Should I send OTP on RCS? expand_more

Most Indian stacks still do WhatsApp Authentication + SMS fallback because both paths are documented and DLT-familiar. RCS OTP is possible on some aggregator contracts; treat it as a third path with device-support risk, not a default. Last updated 18 September 2026. Meta WhatsApp rates and Google RCS partner terms change. SMS ₹ ranges are typical DLT market, not a quote. Ominiflow does not sell RCS.
