What is agentic commerce?
IDC predicts 64% of customer interactions will run through agents and answer engines — not the brand site — by 2029. LLM assistants are convenient but keep the data. Website concierge bots own the data but miss daily life. WhatsApp is where convenience and context meet. Agentic commerce is customers researching, deciding, and transacting through AI agents and answer engines rather than only on a brand website. IDC predicts 64% of customer interactions will run through those surfaces by 2029. The brand problem is keeping enough context to act — not only being mentioned in a generic assistant.

64% of customer interactions will run through agents and answer engines rather than a brand’s own site by 2029, IDC predicts. Agentic commerce is not a chatbot demo. It is customers buying and getting help inside AI — and brands having to choose where that AI actually lives.
IDC’s Roger Beharry Lall, writing on WhatsApp for Business (sponsored by Meta), frames the choice as convenience versus context. Most surfaces win one and lose the other. Conversational messaging is the exception: the customer is already there, and the thread can remember the relationship. This playbook keeps that research intact — then shows how to store that context on official WhatsApp Cloud API with Ominiflow.

Too long? Start here
- Three AI surfaces: LLM assistants (easy, no brand data), website concierge bots (all the data, little daily reach), messaging threads (both — if you invest)
- 27% of brands are expected to launch concierge agents on owned sites by end of 2026 — necessary, not sufficient
- Context is the reusable record: verified facts, behaviour across channels, why they wrote now, what you already offered
- WhatsApp wins when the same number holds OTP, orders, support, and marketing — see orchestration
- Do it on Ominiflow: Cloud API + AI + CRM on one thread · ship a pilot that graduates · start free
The three AI surfaces — and the trade-off
IDC says enterprise attention is pooling on three commercial surfaces. Each breaks convenience or context.
LLM assistants
ChatGPT-class tools are where 63% of consumers now start research. Convenient. The catch: data stays on the platform. The brand learns nothing reusable. No identity, no order history, no lifetime thread.
Brand chatbots
Concierge agents on your site give total visibility. IDC expects 27% of brands to launch them by end of 2026. They only see people who already chose to visit — high intent, tiny daily footprint, extra friction in the day.
Conversational platforms
Messaging sits in the daily routine. Unlike a one-shot LLM query, a WhatsApp thread can keep first-party context — if you respect opt-in and actually connect Shopify, CRM, and the inbox. That investment is deliberate, not automatic.
India already lives on surface three. A D2C buyer is more likely to paste a tracking question into WhatsApp than to open your PWA. Putting the entire AI budget into “rank in ChatGPT” or a homepage widget misses the thread they already trust.
What IDC means by context
Context is not “we have a CRM.” In IDC’s definition it is the fuller real-time picture an agent needs to act: verified facts of the relationship, behavioural signals across channels, why the customer is reaching out right now, and a record of what was already offered or decided — so the next turn builds on the last instead of repeating it. (IDC #US54429926, March 2026.)
A persistent WhatsApp thread is how that picture stays attached to a phone number the customer actually checks. LLM discovery cannot do that for you. A website bot only does it after they have already decided to come over.
| Surface | Convenience | Brand context | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| LLM assistants | High — already in the habit | Near zero after the query | GEO so you get cited; then send people into WhatsApp, not a dead-end snippet |
| Website concierge | Low — extra destination | High — first-party | Keep it for logged-in account work; do not make it the only agent |
| WhatsApp thread | High — already in the pocket | High — if CRM and orders are wired | One Cloud API number; AI + human inbox; templates for the moments they did not start |

Why messaging is where agentic commerce actually closes
A site chatbot sees the customer after they have decided to visit. An LLM sees the query, not necessarily the identity, and does not share the transaction back. A messaging thread can carry both: history for what to offer next, and a channel that is already open when the moment is right.
IDC’s payoff: that mix lowers cost to serve (faster resolution), keeps convenience, and is the context a timed upsell depends on. Brands that only chase a “rented” LLM audience never build the intimacy. Messaging is where trust compounds — the same compounding Meta and BCG measured when the lifecycle shares one thread (2× CLV/CAC pattern).
One number, one record. OTP, COD, WISMO, and the drop share the contact. Context dies if marketing uses a different unofficial sender.
Wire the systems the agent must act on. Shopify order, Zoho stage, payment status — or the agent is a chatty FAQ.
Pick up where you left off. Shared inbox + AI handoff with full history. Customers should not re-type the order ID.
Earn the thread. Utility and authentication before aggressive marketing. Opt-in and quality rating still apply.
How to apply this on Ominiflow
You cannot control whether a consumer asks ChatGPT about your category. You can control whether the buyer who then messages you gets a dumb restart or a thread that already knows the last SKU.
1. Treat WhatsApp as the context store, not a broadcast pipe
Connect Shopify or WooCommerce so order status is live. Map Zoho/HubSpot so the AI and the human see the same stage. That is the “deliberate investment” IDC says messaging requires — mediated by Meta opt-in and policy, which is why this runs on official Cloud API only.
Setup: CRM without developers · store with Meta fees at cost.
2. Let the agent act, then hand off
IDC’s agentic future assumes the system can complete a step, not only describe it. On Ominiflow: AI node for FAQ and WISMO, catalog/pay link to close, “talk to human” into the shared inbox. Same jobs Meta lists for Business Agent — on the number you own with your BSP.
3. Do not starve messaging to fund LLM SEO
GEO still matters so assistants cite you. It does not replace a channel that generates reusable first-party context. Split the roadmap: cite-able pages and a production WhatsApp agent. Shipping order: one expert use case this week — the pilots-to-results playbook.
Ominiflow as the context layer
Ominiflow is the WhatsApp Cloud API layer where that context lives: templates, AI flows, team inbox, and CRM on one official number. Meta conversation fees pass at cost. AI agents are included in the Revenue OS (Acquire → Qualify → Sell → Collect → Support → Retain) — so the next message is cheaper because the last one already taught the thread.
FAQ
What is agentic commerce? expand_more
Agentic commerce is customers researching, deciding, and transacting through AI agents and answer engines rather than only on a brand website. IDC predicts 64% of customer interactions will run through those surfaces by 2029. The brand problem is keeping enough context to act — not only being mentioned in a generic assistant.
Why isn’t an LLM assistant enough for my brand? expand_more
IDC notes LLM assistants are convenient, but data generated there stays on the platform. The brand often learns nothing reusable and cannot connect journeys over a lifetime. Use GEO to get cited, then move the buyer into a WhatsApp thread you control.
Why not only put an AI concierge on our website? expand_more
Owned-site agents give first-party data, and IDC expects 27% of brands to launch them by end of 2026. They reach people who already sought you out and add a destination that is not part of daily messaging habits. Pair the site bot with WhatsApp for prospects and repeat buyers who never open the homepage.
Why WhatsApp for agentic commerce? expand_more
Conversational platforms sit in daily routines and can keep first-party context in a persistent thread — identity, orders, what was already offered — so the next interaction does not start from zero. That is where convenience and context stop being opposites, if you invest in Cloud API, CRM, and opt-in.
How does Ominiflow hold that context? expand_more
One official WhatsApp Cloud API number with AI, shared inbox, Shopify/Zoho sync, and approved templates. The contact record and chat history stay with your team. Typical go-live is 5–7 business days with complete Business Manager documents.
