What are WhatsApp Ads in Status?

1.5 billion+ people open WhatsApp’s Updates tab every day. Meta now lets businesses extend ad campaigns into Status — between organic stories — and send taps into a WhatsApp chat, a website, or soon an app. Promoted Channels are next. Here is what that means if you run Cloud API. Ads in Status are Meta ads that appear in WhatsApp’s Updates tab between organic Status content. WhatsApp says 1.5 billion+ people visit that tab every day. Advertisers can send taps to a WhatsApp chat, a website, or (coming soon) an app. Ads do not appear in personal chats.

1.5 billion+ people visit WhatsApp’s Updates tab every day — to watch Status or follow Channels from people and organisations they already care about. Meta’s pitch for businesses is simple: show up there, between organic Status content, and send the tap into a conversation, a website, or (soon) an app. Personal chats stay out of it.

This recap keeps the official WhatsApp for Business page intact — Ads in Status, destinations, Promoted Channels, and the privacy rules — then maps the click to what you actually operate: a Cloud API number with a bot, a shared inbox, and campaign tags. Ominiflow is that layer. The new placement is distribution. The thread is still the product.

Primary source: Ads in Status and Channels on WhatsApp for Business. Privacy notes: Advertising built with privacy in mind. First announced in Meta’s June 2025 Updates-tab post. Product availability and “coming soon” items change — verify in Ads Manager.

Too long? Start here

  • Ads in Status sit in the Updates tab, between 24-hour organic Status. They are not inside 1:1 chats, calls, or personal Status
  • Click destinations: open a WhatsApp chat with the business, send people to any website page, or (coming soon) deep-link into an app
  • Promoted Channels — boost a Channel in the directory — is listed as coming soon on the same page
  • Privacy line Meta repeats: personal messages, calls, and statuses stay end-to-end encrypted and cannot be used to show ads
  • On Ominiflow: treat Status ads like any other Click-to-WhatsApp source — qualify in the first reply, tag the campaign, use the 72-hour window, hand off in the shared inbox · start free

What Meta is selling

Two surfaces. One tab. WhatsApp is not putting banners in your family group.

01

Ads in Status

People and businesses already use Status for photos, videos, voice notes, and text that expire in 24 hours. Ads appear between that organic content. You extend an existing Meta campaign into WhatsApp Status instead of building a separate “WhatsApp-only” media plan.

02

Promoted Channels

Channels are one-way broadcasts — texts, photos, videos, stickers, polls — from brands and creators. Promoted Channel ads boost a Channel in the directory so people who do not already follow you can find it. WhatsApp for Business still labels this coming soon on the product page.

The sentence that matters for operators: seamlessly extend your Meta ad campaigns to WhatsApp Status. This is a placement on campaigns you already know how to buy in Ads Manager — not a new WhatsApp-native ad console you have to learn from zero. Feed, Stories, Reels, and now Status can share the same creative and the same objective, with WhatsApp as the landing surface.

Where the click goes

Meta lists three destinations. Only one of them lands in a thread you have to staff. Pick on purpose.

DestinationWhat the person getsWhen to use itWhat Ominiflow does
WhatsApp chatA conversation with the business, immediatelyQuestions, recommendations, a path to buy in-threadBot + campaign tag + CTWA inbox; 72-hour free-form window
WebsiteAny page — product, landing, offerCatalog depth, checkout you already trust, lead forms you will not rebuild in chatPixel + later remarketing into chat if they opt in
App (coming soon)Installs or a specific in-app actionWhen the conversion lives in the app, not in WhatsApp or a browserPlan the same number for post-install support so the thread is not a second brand

Chat is the high-intent path. Someone who taps a Status ad into WhatsApp has already chosen a conversation over a form. If the first reply is “thanks, we will call you,” you paid for a Status impression to recreate a landing-page drop-off. Qualify in chat. Catalog, pay link, or WhatsApp Flows if you can close there. Website is fine when the SKU or checkout is not ready in-thread — just do not pretend the click was a WhatsApp lead if it never opened a chat.

Privacy: what is not changing

WhatsApp’s own framing is the useful one for customers who will ask: ads live where people are already open to discovery — Status and Channels. The personal messaging product is not becoming a feed.

lock

Personal chats stay private. Personal messages, calls, and statuses are end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp says they cannot be used to show ads. Nobody outside the chat — not even WhatsApp — can read them to target you.

shield

Personal data stays with WhatsApp. Phone numbers, personal messages, calls, statuses, and device contacts are not the targeting fuel. Meta’s ads stack uses limited signals (country, language, Channel follows, ad interaction — and, if Accounts Center is linked, preferences from other Meta apps).

tune

Preferences are easy to control. People can hide advertisers and manage ad settings from the Updates tab. Build creatives that still work if a slice of the audience opts down — do not depend on a “they saw my Status so they must want a blast” assumption.

For Cloud API teams this is also a quality-rating issue. Status ads send strangers into the number. They did not opt into marketing templates. Do not follow a Status click with a festival promo outside the customer-care window. That is the same consent split as every other Click-to-WhatsApp source — see remarketing vs retargeting and the quality rating guide.

Status ads vs the Click-to-WhatsApp you already run

You may already buy Click-to-WhatsApp on Facebook and Instagram. Status is another placement, not a replacement. Keep the stack one number.

A Channel follow is not documented marketing consent for Cloud API templates. A Status-ad chat is a user-initiated thread — service window, not a licence to broadcast. If you run both a Channel and an API number, keep the jobs separate: Channel for one-to-many content, Cloud API for OTP, orders, support, and opted-in marketing. That is the same orchestration rule as the Meta × BCG lifecycle playbook.

How to take Status-ad traffic on Ominiflow

The placement is new. The failure mode is old: paid inbound, dead first reply, personal phone, no campaign tag. Do these four things before you turn Status on in Ads Manager.

1. Land every chat on the number you will keep

Connect the WhatsApp Business Platform number that already holds OTP, orders, and support. If Status ads hit a Business-app phone and Shopify hits Cloud API, you split context — the opposite of a Revenue OS. One official number. Coexistence if reps still live in the app; API for the queue. Path: Click-to-WhatsApp ads · coexistence.

2. Greet in under a minute — including at 1 a.m.

Status is a 24-hour canvas. People open Updates at night. A bot that asks intent, city, and “catalog / talk to human” is the difference between a conversation and a Monday voicemail. Visual builder: no-code store chatbot. Same five jobs Meta lists for Business Agent — FAQ, recommend, book, qualify, hand off — on the number you own.

3. Tag the campaign, then use the 72-hour window

Click-to-WhatsApp (including Status → chat) can open a Free Entry Point window. Session messages in that window are the cheapest way to finish qualification, send a catalogue, or book a slot. After it closes, marketing templates need opt-in. Do not “remarket” a Status clicker with a promo they never consented to. Playbook: WhatsApp remarketing · marketing message quality.

4. Measure chats and revenue, not “Status was on”

In Ads Manager you will see reach and clicks. In Ominiflow you should see which campaign produced qualified leads, purchases, and block rate. Pause or re-creative if quality yellow/red. The Updates tab is discovery; it is not a licence to raise send volume. India D2C: pair Status → chat with COD confirm on the same thread so the new lead does not become RTO.

How this maps to Ominiflow

Ominiflow already treats Meta ads that click to WhatsApp as a first-class acquire stage: campaign labels, AI qualification, shared inbox, CRM sync, and Meta conversation fees at cost. Ads in Status are another on-ramp into that same WhatsApp Revenue OS (Acquire → Qualify → Sell → Collect → Support → Retain). You do not need a second BSP because the impression moved from Instagram to the Updates tab.

What to do this week

  • Turn Status on as a placement on one existing Click-to-WhatsApp campaign — same creative, chat destination, one Cloud API number
  • Publish a 24/7 qualifier (intent + talk-to-human) before you raise budget
  • Leave Promoted Channels and app destination until WhatsApp marks them live in your market; do not build a Channel-follower blast list and call it opt-in
  • Keep Authentication and Utility templates clean on that number so the new strangers inherit a trusted thread, not a promo graveyard

FAQ

What are WhatsApp Ads in Status? expand_more

Ads in Status are Meta ads that appear in WhatsApp's Updates tab between organic Status content. WhatsApp says 1.5 billion+ people visit that tab every day. Advertisers can send taps to a WhatsApp chat, a website, or (coming soon) an app. They do not appear in personal chats.

Do WhatsApp ads show up in personal messages? expand_more

No. WhatsApp states that personal messages, calls, and statuses are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be used to show ads. Ads are limited to Status and Channels in the Updates tab -- the discovery surfaces, not the private inbox.

What are Promoted Channels on WhatsApp? expand_more

Promoted Channel ads are meant to boost a business or creator Channel in the directory so new people can follow it. On the official Ads in Status and Channels page this is still marked coming soon. A Channel follow is not the same as Cloud API marketing opt-in.

Are Ads in Status the same as Click-to-WhatsApp ads? expand_more

Same family, different placement. Click-to-WhatsApp already sends Facebook and Instagram taps into a WhatsApp chat. Ads in Status extend those Meta campaigns into the WhatsApp Updates tab. If the destination is chat, handle them like any other CTWA lead on Cloud API.

How do I handle WhatsApp Status ad clicks on Ominiflow? expand_more

Route the Cloud API number into Ominiflow, run a qualifier bot 24/7, tag the campaign, use the 72-hour messaging window, and hand off to the shared inbox. Meta conversation fees pass at cost. Typical go-live is 5-7 business days with complete Business Manager documents.
